5 Simple and fun ways to bond with your dog

@artieandbrody

You love your dog and your dog loves you, but have you wondered how much of a bond you and your dog have? Dogs have the ability to create lifelong bonds with their owners and form a relationship like no other pet can, but sometimes it takes some effort. Here are 5 of the best ways you can bond with your furry friend:

Things to Consider

Before we get started, there are a few things you should consider when planning bonding activities with your dog:

How old is your dog?

The age of your dog will affect what kind of bonding activities might be best for your pup. An older dog will need less playtime but may prefer more cuddling or car rides, whereas a younger dog will want to play and be active. As dogs age, they may have health conditions that would make more physical activities like running and hiking too much for them.

What is their history?

Is your dog a rescue? Rescue dogs typically have an unknown past that can make it harder for them to warm up to new owners. Some shelters get dogs that have been abused, so they are scared of a certain gender or sudden activities. Some dogs can have health problems such as being blind, having a hard time hearing, or developing bad joints. These things should really be considered when choosing activities. Keep in mind that bonding can take time and patience, and a willingness to really think about what will keep your dog healthy and happy.

What breed is your dog?

Some types of dogs bond easier than others, it’s just in their blood! Dogs such as Labs, Beagles, Shetland Sheepdogs, German Shepherds, Great Danes, Dachshunds, Pitbulls, Yorkies, and Shih Tzus all tend to find a family member and become inseparable which makes your job just a little easier. Just because your dog is not on this list doesn’t mean they won’t warm up to you eventually, it just might take a little more time.

With all of this in mind, what are some simple and fun ways to bond with your best friend?

Talk to them

This sounds silly and you might feel crazy doing it, but younger dogs love to hear your voice! Whether you’re working from home, studying, or just reading before bed, talking to your pup can go a long way in bonding with them. Your pup doesn’t even really care what you’re saying (unless it’s “walk!” or “treat!), just the sound of your voice is enough.

Car rides and more car rides

Whether it’s a ride around the block or even a road trip, your dog will have the time of their life! There are all types of new smells and some dogs love the sensation of car rides. With the wind fluffing up their coat, they’ll be the coolest dog in the neighborhood just as you’ll be the coolest owner in their heart!

However, not all dogs like car rides so be sure to keep an eye on them. If they’re majorly shaking and whining, this may not be the activity for them! You also need to make sure they are safe during the ride. Finally, you should NEVER leave your dog in the car alone (EVER).

Welcome them in

It’s possible for a dog to be in your house and not feel like a member of your pack. Put out their food when you eat, encourage them to sleep when you sleep, and let them be lazy while you’re being lazy. It’s easier to become two peas in a pod if you’re on the same schedule or at least a very similar one.

TV Time!

One of my favorite things to do to bond with my dogs is to put on a YouTube video, but not just any video. I typically go on relaxmydog’s channel and pick a video to have on in the background. These videos have changing dog themed scenes for them to watch and relaxing music in the background to provide a calming atmosphere. My dogs absolutely love this and I’m sure your dog will too!

If you want to opt for a paid option that connects flawlessly to any Roku or Smart TV, DOGTV is perfect for you. DOGTV is scientifically backed to help keep them relaxed and entertained whether you are home or away. At $9.99 a month, your dog will loosen up, giving you a happier, confident, and overall playful buddy.

Invite a playful atmosphere

Like us humans, dogs don’t like to be serious all the time, so don’t make them! Run around with them, throw their toys, and play tug-of-war. In order to be able to truly bond with your dog, you need to get down on their level and show them that you are making an effort. Have fun with it and get a little creative!

No matter the breed, age, or personality of your dog—your dog wants to be your best friend. By getting a little creative with your interactions and keeping their wants and needs in consideration, you will be hand in paw with them in no time. What ideas do you have for bonding with your pup?
